Description

A Very Important Series of Coins of Syracuse mostly from a Distinguished European Collector
Tetradrachm circa 478-475, AR 16.99 g. Slow quadriga driven r. by charioteer holding kentron and reins; above, Nike flying r. to crown the horses. Rev. ΣVRAK – OΣ – I – O – N Head of the nymph Arethusa r., wearing pearl diadem and pearl necklace; around, four dolphins swimming clockwise. SNG München 936 (these dies). Boehringer 114. Very rare. An appealing portrait of fine late Archaic style. Wonderful old cabinet tone, obverse from a worn die, otherwise good very fine / about extremely fine Ex CNG sale 94, 2013, 104.
