Description

Germany, silver anti-Catholic satirical medal (spottmedaille), 1543, by Wolf Milicz, heads of a cardinal and a fool, rev., a bishop and a nun, 39.5mm, 14.70g (Katz 298a; Goppel 120), toned, extremely fine and rare. Rare as a struck medal and most examples are cast. It has been associated with the disputes that arose following the election of the first German protestant bishop, Nicolaus von Amsdorf, in Naumberg in 1542. The medal is recorded in Habich, I, 701, pl. 81, 10 as after a model by Hagenauer.
