Afghanistan, 1878-80, no clasp (Maj. C. W. Campbell, 1st Bl. Cavy.), with related silver Eton College rowing prize medal (C. W. Campbell, Eton, 1858.), tiny edge nicks, otherwise good extremely fine and lustrous, minor edge bruise to second (2) Major Charles Walter Campbell was born in Long Ditton, Surrey in August 1842, the son of James Campbell and Caroline Campbell of Queen Ann Street, London (and later of Cawley Priory, Chichester). Educated at Eton College, he was nominated as a Cadet in the East India Company’s Bengal Cavalry by E.I.C. Director Sir Henry Montgomery, at the recommendation of his father. Passing the Military Committee on 3 August 1859, he embarked for India on 12 October and was commissioned as Cornet on 12 October 1859. Posted initially to the Bengal General List (Cavalry), he undertook an initial attachment with the 7th Dragoon Guards.Promoted to Lieutenant on 4 January 1861, he served for a time as A.D.C. to Lieutenant-General Sir Hope Grant, and was later to Captain on 12 October 1871, and then to Major on 12 October 1879. He served with the 1st Bengal Cavalry in the Second Afghan War as part of the Kurram Valley Field Force, and was afterwards furloughed on medical grounds for a period of one year from 13 November 1880. He was granted the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel and subsequently retired on 24 January 1884. Offered with some useful copied research. He was married to Mary Loudon, daughter of Colonel Loudon (Commissary-General, Madras) at Madras Cathedral on 20th November 1873, and research suggests that he died in 1920.
