Germany School (mid-16th century), The Judgement of Paris, circular bronze plaquette, the scene within a wooded landscape with Hermes awakening Paris who reclines in the foreground, the Three Graces on the left and Cupid in the sky, 70.5mm (Weber 201), very fine early cast, rare (the reverse with the number 2143 in black ink) The plaquette is contained in an official red leather case with the arms of Pope Pius IX on the lid and a ticket within dated 1924 suggesting it could be from the Vatican Library - but this cannot be verified; also with a transcription of a letter of 1925 from O.M. Dalton of the British Museum giving reference to the example of this plaquette in Berlin.
