Description

Charles I, pattern unite in gold, 1630, by Nicholas Briot, m.m. St. George and Dragon on reverse only, signed ∙B∙ on both sides, obv., large crowned bust of the King left with long hair, wearing lace collar, armour and mantle, CAROLVS ∙ D:G ∙ MAGN ∙ BRITANN ∙ FRANC ∙ ET HIBE ∙ REX ∙, plain stops with diamond after REX, wire-line inner circle broken by bust; rev., AVSPICIIS ∙ REX ∙ MAGNE ∙ TVIS, diamond stops, crowned and garnished square-topped shield with crowned C R at sides, beaded inner circle broken by crown and cross of orb dividing date 16-30 above, 9.04g (Brooker 1243; Schneider 269; N. 2660; Montagu 390; Murdoch 282; Farquhar 20), minor flan imperfections on reverse and with very light traces of handling, good very fine Provenance: Sotheby’s, 22 March 1984, lot 16.
