Spanish (early 17th century), The Vision of St Ildephonsus, bronze-gilt pax, centred with an image of the Virgin Mary seated and investing the kneeling St Ildephonsus with his priest's chasuble, flanked by attendant figures; within an Italianate architectural frame, the split pediment containing an image of God the Father; a central boss at the base with traces of a cross potent, 136 x 80mm, with plain stand on the reverse, slight damage from the upper part of the stand, a fine early cast Ex Alain Edrei (1931-2021) collection, Paris [inventory number 142 in red on the reverse]; ex Tajan, Paris, 26 May 2008, lot 184. St Ildephonsus was Archbishop of Toledo (657-667), best known for his work entitled De perpetua virginitate Mariae contra tres infineles which established Marian theology in Spain, On 18 December 665 he had a vision of the Virgin Mary appearing to him and presenting him with a priest's chasuble for his zeal in honouring her.
