Description

A WW2 and G.S.M. ‘Malaya’ Group of 7 awarded to Sergeant John Rockell O’Connor, 4th Hussars, who is believed to have served with the Buckinghamshire Light Infantry during WW2, comprising: 1939-45 Star; France and Germany Star; Africa Star, with tailor’s copy ‘North Africa 1942-43 clasp; Italy Star; Defence and War Medals, 1939-45; General Service Medal, G.VI.R, single clasp, Malaya (2572670 Sjt. J. R. O’Connor. 4 H.); Group swing mounted on card, with related cap badge, good very fine to extremely fine (7) Sergeant John Rockell OConnor was born in 1922, the son of Lawrence OConnor, resident of Coleshill, near Amersham, Buckinghamshire. Serving initially under the name John Rockell during WW2, his marriage certificate of 18 February 1942 (where he married Miss Lucy Lord, in the County of Gloucester), confirms that he was serving at that time as No. 5393278 Private John Rockell, Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, with his father confirmed as Lawrence OConnor. For reasons unknown, Rockell seems to have latterly taken up his fathers surname OConnor, and this is reflected on his G.S.M. Malaya, with the rank of Sergeant with the 4th Hussars.
