Serving initially under the name John Rockell during WW2, his marriage certificate of 18 February 1942 (where he married Miss Lucy Lord, in the County of Gloucester), confirms that he was serving at that time as No. 5393278 Private John Rockell, Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, with his father confirmed as Lawrence OConnor. For reasons unknown, Rockell seems to have latterly taken up his fathers surname OConnor, and this is reflected on his G.S.M. Malaya, with the rank of Sergeant with the 4th Hussars.
