Description

A Great War Long Service Group of 3 awarded to Musician Frederick Thomas Howell, Royal Marines Band, a violinist who served aboard the battleship H.M.S. Caesar during the Great War, and was awarded his L.S.G.C. while aboard H.M.S. Valiant, comprising: British War and Victory Medals, 1914-1920 (R.M.B. 2084 Mus. F. T. Howell.); Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct, G.V.R. (R.M.B. 2084 F. T. Howell, Mus. H.M.S. Valiant); Group loose, some light marks, almost extremely fine (3) Musician Frederick Thomas Howell (1899-1988) was born on 24 February 1899 at Eastney, Portsmouth, and enlisted at Eastney as a Band Boy with the Royal Marines Band Service at the Royal Naval School of Music (R.N.S.M.) on 24 February 1913 at the age of 14. Following initial training he was advanced to the rank of Musician, and on 7 April 1915 joined the training ship H.M.S. Impregnable. On 26 October 1917 he embarked in the battleship H.M.S. Caesar and continued for the remainder of the Great War. Playing the violin and clarinet, he was awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 10 May 1932 whilst aboard H.M.S. Valiant, and was discharged to pension on 23 February 1938, only to be recalled for service during WW2. During WW2 he served with Royal Marine Bands in the shore establishments H.M.S. Osprey, and Europa, being finally demobbed on 9 October 1945 after over 30 years service. He died on 16 May 1988.
