A Rare Great War Trio and Norwegian Medal for Heroic Deeds awarded to Engineer James William Blackburn, Royal Naval Reserve, for ‘gallant deeds in saving the crew of the shipwrecked Norwegian vessel Georg, of Oslo’ on 21 December 1929, comprising: 1914-15 Star (E.S. 3151, J. W. Blackburn, Engn. R.N.R.); British War and Victory Medals, 1914-1919 (3151 E.S. J. W. Blackburn. Engn. R.N.R); Norway, Medal for Heroic Deeds, Haakon VII issue, in silver with crown, 29mm width, reverse privately engraved in upright capitals ‘J. W. Blackburn / 21.12.29’; Group swing mounted for display within large, glazed, professionally-made frame, with original named award certificate above, lightly toned, good extremely fine (4) Engineer James William Blackburn, born 1 December 1881, of Hull, enrolled for service in the Great War with the R.N.R. on 27 April 1915. He served aboard H.M.S. St. George until 14 April 1918, taking subsequent positions aboard H.M. Ships Hannibal and Research. Some years after the war he took part in the rescue of the crew of the Norwegian vessel Georg, of Oslo, on 21 December 1929, for which he received the Norwegian Medal for Heroic Deeds in silver, with crown. Research suggests that this Norwegian vessel had been anchored off Blyth, Northumberland, when it had to be abandoned due to challenging conditions at sea.
