1914 Star, with rosette upon ribbon (9939 Pte. G. Rowan. R. Highrs), also offered with matching miniature, toned, very fine (2) Private George Rowan, of Partick, Glasgow, served with the 1st Battalion, Royal Highlanders (The Black Watch) and was taken as a prisoner of war on 11 November 1914. This date coincides with the Battle of Nonne Boschen, part of the First Battle of Ypres, where the B.E.F. numbering some 7,850 men faced an assault by some twenty-five battalions of the elite Prussian Guard, numbering 17,500 men in total. Private Rowan is additionally entitled to a Great War Pair.
