Description

India General Service, 1908-1935, E.VII.R., 2 clasps, North West Frontier 1908, Afghanistan N.W.F. 1919 (Lieut: C. H. Campbell. Q.O.C. Guides Infy:), engraved in a running script, lightly toned, extremely fine Major Charles Hay Campbell (B.1883) was born on 14 June 1883 into a distinguished military family with over 100 years of prior service in India. The son of Leveson Granville Alexander Campbell (Ayrshire Yeomanry and 2nd Assam Light Infantry) and Jane Wemyss Campbell (ne Murray), he passed out from the Royal Military College and was commissioned as Second Lieutenant from the Unattached List pending appointment with the Indian Staff Corps on 27 August 1902. He was confirmed at the rank of Second Lieutenant on 21 January 1904, and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in the Queens Own Corps of Guides (Lumsdens) on 3 October 1904. It was with the Queens Own Corps of Guides that he saw service on the North West Frontier in 1908, and he was promoted to Captain on 27 August 1911. Serving also during the Great War he was promoted to Major on 27 August 1917, before serving in Afghanistan on the North West Frontier in 1919.
