Queen’s South Africa, 1899-1902, 3rd type reverse, 2 clasps, Cape Colony, South Africa 1902 (15214 Gnr: W. Westwood. 76th Bty: R.F.A.), suspension slightly loose and very minor bruise, otherwise very fine Gunner William Westwood, of Dundee, Scotland, served with the 76th Battery, Royal Field Artillery during the Boer War (roll confirms, with entitlement to an additional Orange Free State clasp). He later served in India, however his service papers confirm, bizarrely, that he died from injuries received by a fall from a train of the G.N.R. (Great Northern Railway) near Holme on 27 February 1909. The story was covered by the Dundee Courier on 17 March 1909 with witnesses reporting no disturbances or fighting, although another gunner reported that Westwood had been worse for drink when seen at London earlier in the day.
