An Egypt Campaign and Great War Group of 3 awarded to Officers’ Steward 1st Class George Henry Chivers, Royal Navy, comprising: Egypt & Sudan, 1882-89, no clasp, dated reverse, 1882 (G. Chivers. Comrs. Svt. H.M.S. “Thalia”); British War Medal, 1914-1920 (111138 G. H. Chivers. O.S. 1 R.N.); Khedive’s Star, dated 1882, unnamed as issued; Group mounted on card, with an associated Masonic jewel of the Royal Masonic Hospital, in silver, bearing hallmarks for London dated ‘r’ for 1932 to ‘Bro. F. O. H. Chivers. No.2579’, unevenly toned, generally good very fine (4) Officers Steward 1st Class George Henry Chivers was born on 18 February 1860 at Tunbridge, Kent, and enlisted for service with the Royal Navy on 19 December 1879. During the campaign in Egypt and Sudan he served aboard H.M.S. Thalia as Commanders Servant, transferring from the Thalia to the Himalaya on 14 December 1882, where he remained until 13 December 1889 (and where he received his Egypt Sudan medal). He continued to serve aboard various ships until 16 October 1903 where he appears to have retired from further service, only to be brought back into service during the Great War at the rank of Officers Steward 1st Class on 2 August 1914. For his WW1 service his BWM was his only entitlement.
