*Italy, Workshop of Guglielmo della Porta (c. 1514-77), The Pietà, bronze-gilt pax, the Virgin supporting the dead body of Christ, a ladder propped against the base of the cross in the background and with symbols of the Passion in the foreground; set within an integrally cast frame with cherub’s heads above and below, scrollwork and acanthus leaves on either side; the back with an affixed plate with traces of where a stand has been removed, 148 x 100mm (cf. Warren, Ashmolean, p. 805, fig. 299), slight wear to the gilding, an extremely fine contemporary cast of fine quality.
