Description

Germany, Circle of Hans Daucher and Hans Schwarz, Ferdinand (later the Holy Roman Emperor) as King of Hungary and Bohemia and his father Philip the Handsome, King of Castile, uniface lead medal, c. 1528, their busts left, each wearing the order of the Golden Fleece and wide-brimmed hats, 85mm (Habich 110; Steguweit (1995) p. 96 and pl. 10), pierced, fine old cast. The only known contemporary example listed by Habich (91 mm) was sold at Sotheby’s, 5 July 1994, lot 99 and is now in the Berlin Staatliche Museum. Ferdinand’s 25th birthday took place in 1528 and this may have been the reason for the issuing of this unusual medal which depicts him alongside his deceased father. Another cast (82.64mm) was in the Astarte auction XIX, 6 May 2006, lot 685 – there attributed to Conrad Meit. Provenance: Blumka Estate, Sotheby’s New York, 9-10 January 1996, lot 363 (part).
Estimate: 200 - 300
