Description

Rome (third quarter of 15th century), A Centaur, oval bronze plaquette, the centaur walking right, draped with lion’s skin, holding a thyrsus and krater on his shoulders, 48.0 x 40.2mm (Molinier 20; Bange 110; Kress 255; Scaglia I.4; Bargello 12; Warren, Ashmolean 354), cast from a pierced example, very fine early cast. The original sardonyx cameo once owned by Lorenzo de’ Medici and of which this plaquette is a copy is preserved at the Museo Nazionale, Naples.
