DAMIETTA. JEAN DE BRIENNE, 1219-1221. Denier. Facing head with triangular crown, +IOHANNES REX Rv. Cross with annulet in second and third quarter, +DAMIETA 0.89 g. Metc. 202, Schlumb. XX, 4, MPS p. 80, 45. Some green deposits on reverse.
Very fine

The type with John's name on the same side as the face is considered to be the early type which was coined in Damiette. The other type, with John's name around the cross, may have been coined at Acre. Bought from Simon Bendall, London, in Oct. 1996.
