Gupta Dynasty, Kumaragupta I (Mahendraditya) (415-455 CE), Gold Dinar, "Horseman - Right" type, Obv: the king, nimbate, riding a ceremonially adorned horse to the right, wearing a necklace and armlets and his sash flowing out from behind, holding a bow in his left hand whose upper part is visible just above the neck of the horse and a sword in his right, Brahmi legend "Ksitipatirajito vijayi Ku(maragupto divam jayati)" around the field, Rev: the goddess Lakshmi, her ears, neck, arms, wrists, waist and ankles heavily bejewelled, nimbate, seated facing left on a wicker stool, the left hand of the goddess rests on her waist, holding a lotus with a long stalk, feeding grapes to a peacock on the left field, Brahmi legend "Ajitamahendrah" on the right, dotted border around, 8.17g, 19.78mm, (Altekar. Bayana Hoard # Pl. XXV- 1-4/Variant of TOTGE, S. Kumar # Class III-Var. C, Coin No. 4), sharply struck, choice extremely fine, Extremely Rare.
Note: This is a superfine example of the imperial Horseman variety. It has the fully visible peacock on its reverse and almost complete legends on both the sides, making it an inexplicably attractive specimen.
