Description

★ A lightly toned tetradrachm of Alexander with an interesting countermark ★

KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 17.20 g, 12 h), Myriandros, struck under Menes or Philotas, 330-325. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress; on cheek, uncertain countermark (South Arabian beth?). Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Zeus seated left on low throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and eagle standing right with closed wings in his right; to left, monogram of ΒΑΙ; below throne, monogram of MI. Price 3229. For countermark, cf. CNG 31 (2016), 55. A lightly toned piece with an interesting countermark. Light deposits on the obverse, otherwise, about extremely fine.
