SICILY. Gela. Circa 490/85-480/75 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 22 mm, 8.26 g, 9 h). Bearded warrior, nude but for high helmet, riding horse to right, brandishing spear in his right hand and holding reins in his left. Rev. CEΛAΣ Forepart of the river-god Gelas, in the form of a man-headed bull, to right. Jenkins, Gela, 54.10 and pl. 4, 54 ( this coin, O17/R23). Locker Lampson 85 ( this coin ). SNG ANS 9 ( same dies ). SNG Delepierre 541 ( same dies ). Beautifully toned and with an excellent pedigree. The usual die breaks on the reverse and with a few minor marks on the edge, otherwise, good very fine.
