Julius Caesar, 49-44 BC. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 4.00 g, 4 h), with Aulus Allienus, proconsular governor of Sicily, Lilybaion (?), late 47. C•CAESAR - IMP•COS[•ITER] Diademed and draped bust of Venus to right. Rev. A•ALLIENVS - PRO•COS Trinacrus standing left, his right foot set on prow, holding triskeles in his right hand and cloak in his left. Babelon (Alliena) 1 and (Julia) 14. Crawford 457/1. RBW 1599. Sydenham 1022. Rare. A very well centered piece with beautiful old collection toning. Struck from slightly worn dies, otherwise, good very fine.
From an old Viennese collection, formed in the 1950s and 1960s and in 3rd generation family possession since.
This issue was struck in Sicily during Caesar's preparations for his African expedition, in the course of which he defeated the Pompeian forces under Metellus Scipio and the Numidian King Juba I in 46 BC.
