Mark Antony, 44-30 BC. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 3.50 g, 6 h), military mint moving with Mark Antony (Patrae?), 32-31. ANT•AVG III VIR R•P•C Galley right, with scepter tied with fillet on prow. Rev. LEG IX Aquila between two signa. Babelon (Antonia) 118. Crawford 544/25. RBW -. Sydenham 1229. Somewhat rough and scratched, otherwise, about very fine.
From the collection of the Swiss-Spanish coin dealer and former Swiss Guard at the Vatican José Truyol, formed since the early 1970s.
An obscure unit, Antony's Legio IX was not identical with the famed Legio IX Hispana. The latter was an older unit, which we can trace back to the Social War (91-87 BC), and which would fight on Octavian's side at Actium. In Antony's legionary series, his ninth is alternately rendered as VIIII and IX.
