Description

★ An extremely rare drachm of Abdagses II, the penultimate ruler of the Indo-Parthian Kingdom ★

INDO-PARTHIANS, Gondopharid Dynasty. Abdagses II, mid-late 1st century. Drachm (Silver, 19 mm, 3.17 g, 12 h). 𐡏𐡅𐡃 ('wd in Aramaic) Diademed bust of Abdgases II to left, hair added in antiquity by application of punches. Rev. Archer (Arsakes I) seated right on throne, holding bow; below bow, monogram; NЄIK[I] in legend. CNG 87 (2011), 754 = CNG E-274 (2012) 233 ( same dies ). Peus 384 (2005), 413 ( same obverse die, but with hair added in antiquity by the application of punches). Senior Supp. p. 13, (234.4D) = R. Senior: A few more rare Indian ancient coins, in: ONS Newsletter 177 (Autumn 2003), 19. Extremely rare. Good very fine.

Abdagses II likely ruled towards the end of the 1st century AD. He is considered the penultimate ruler of the Indo-Parthian Kingdom, which came to an end in the early 2nd century AD due to invasions by the Kushans and the Shatavahanas.
