Description

Leo I, 457-474. Solidus (Gold, 21 mm, 4.41 g, 6 h), Constantinopolis, circa 457-468. D N LEO PE-RPET AVG Helmeted, pearl-diademed and cuirassed bust of Leo I facing, his head turned slightly to right, holding spear over his shoulder in his right hand and with a shield, decorated with a horseman spearing fallen enemy, on his left shoulder. Rev. VICTORI-A AVGGG Z / CONOB Victory standing front, head to left, holding long jeweled cross in her right hand; in field to right, star. Depeyrot 93/1. RIC 605. Traces of a removed mount and minor marks and with light doubling on the reverse, otherwise, good fine.

From the collection of the Swiss-Spanish coin dealer and former Swiss Guard at the Vatican José Truyol, formed since the early 1970s.
