Description

ISLAMIC, Persia (Pre-Seljuq). Saffarids. Khalaf ibn Ahmad, second reign, AH 360-369 / AD 972-980. Fractional Dinar (Gold, 13 mm, 1.27 g, 11 h), Sijistan, AH [36]4 = 974/5. Within a circle, ‘li-llāh / Muḥammad / rasūl / Allāh’ (‘For Allah. Muhammad is the messenger of Allah’ in Arabic); in the margin, ‘lā ilāha illā Allāh waḥdahū lā sharīka lahū’ (‘There is no deity but Allah, the One, there is no partner to Him’ in Arabic). Rev. Citing the deposed ʿAbbasid caliph al-Mutiʿ lillah (AH 334-363 / AD 946-974) within a circle, ‘al-Muṭīʿ lillāh / Khalaf ibn Aḥmad / ʿAdl’ (‘al-Mutiʿ lillah. Khalaf son of Ahmad. Justice’ in Arabic); in the margin, ‘[bism Al]lāh ḍuriba bi Sijistān sana arbaʿ …’ (‘In the name of Allah. Struck in Sijistan in the year [36]4’ in Arabic). Album 1417. Struck on a slightly short flan as usual, otherwise, good very fine.
