TOKENS AND WEIGHTS, 4th-6th centuries. Host coin a maiorina of Theodosius I, 379-395. Centenionalis (Bronze, 18 mm, 2.22 g, 5 h), Antiochia, 373-383. D N THEODO-SIVS P F AVG Rosette-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Theodosius I to right. Rev. CONCOR-DIA AVGGG / Θ - Φ/K / ANTΔ Constantinopolis, helmeted, seated facing on throne, head to right, holding scepter in her right hand and globe in her left and placing her right foot on prow. RIC 47d. Edge serrated. Earthen deposits, otherwise, about very fine.
From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.
The purpose of such serrated pieces is debated, however, their use as weights for solidi and semisses among the numerous evidently weight-standardized pieces of around 4 and 2 grams, respectively, is very likely.
