Description

★ Nicely toned and with a clear reverse signature ★

SICILY. Syracuse. Second Democracy, 466-405 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 17.13 g, 8 h), obverse die signed by Euainetos, reverse signed by Eukleidas, circa 415-409 BC. Charioteer driving quadriga galloping to left, holding kentron in his right hand and reins in his left; above, Nike flying right, crowning the charioteer with a wreath; in exergue, wheel; on the exergual line, in tiny letters, [EYAINETO]. Rev. [ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙOΣ] Head of Arethousa to left, her hair in ampyx and sphendone, wearing triple-pendant earring and pearl necklace; on bottom of sphendone, in tiny letters, EYKΛLEI; around, four dolphins. BMC 190 ( same dies ). Fischer-Bossert, Coins, 37w ( this coin, V12/R23). Tudeer 37 (V12/R23). SNG ANS 266 ( same dies ). Nicely toned and with a clear reverse signature. Small scratches and flan faults, otherwise, very fine.
