ISLAMIC, Persia (Pre-Seljuq). Qarakhanids (United). Yusuf ibn 'Abd Allah, AH 394-396 and AH 403-405 / AD 1004-1006 and AD 1012-1014. Fals (Bronze, 27 mm, 2.85 g), al-Shash, AH 403 = 1012/3. Within a quadrilobe, ‘Yūsuf’ (in Arabic); two birds and two swastikas around; in the margin, ‘bism Allāh ḍuriba hādhā al-fals bi al-Shāsh sana thalāth wa arbaʿa miʾa’ (‘In the name of Allah. This fals was struck in al-Shash in the year 403’ in Arabic). Rev. ‘li-llāh / Muḥammad / rasūl / Allāh’ (‘To Allah. Muhammad is the messenger of Allah’ in Arabic); citing Ahmad ibn Ali (AH 384-407 / AD 994-1016) as Tungha Qara Kaghan Ahmad in the margin, ‘mimmā amara bihī al-amīr Ṭunghā Qarā Khāqān Aḥmad’ (‘From that ordered by the Amir Tungha Qara Kaghan Ahmad’ in Arabic).
