Mark Antony, 44-30 BC. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 3.88 g, 9 h), military mint moving with Mark Antony (Patrae?), 32-31. ANT•AVG - III•VIR•R•P•C Galley to right, with scepter tied with fillet on prow. Rev. LEG - VIIII Aquila between two signa. Babelon (Antonia) 114. Crawford 544/21. RBW 1843. Sydenham 1225. Struck slightly off center and with minor flan faults on the reverse, otherwise, extremely fine.
From a European collection, formed before 2005.
An obscure unit, Antony's Legio VIIII must not to be confused with Legio IX Hispana, an older unit that had at least served since the Social War, and fought on Octavian's side at Actium. In Antony's legionary series, his ninth is alternately rendered as VIIII and IX.
