★ A beautiful man-headed bull ★
SICILY. Gela. Circa 490/85-480/75 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 20 mm, 8.66 g, 12 h). Nude bearded warrior riding horse to right, brandishing spear in his right hand and holding reins in his left. Rev. CEVAΣ Forepart of the river-god Gelas, in the form of a man-headed bull, to right. Jenkins, Gela, Group I, 80 (O24/R39). SNG ANS 17 ( same dies ). Lightly toned and with a beautiful reverse. Struck from a somewhat worn obverse die and with light porosity, otherwise, very fine.
