Description

INDIA, Post-Mauryan (Malwa). Ujjain. Circa 2nd century BC. AE (Bronze, 15 mm, 4.70 g). Three-headed god (Brahma or Shiva) standing facing; to left, Chakra (sacred wheel) above fish-tank. Rev. Four double-orbed Ujjain symbol. Pieper 280. An unusually attractive example. Minor deposits and somewhat smoothed, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of Prof. Dr. Björn-Uwe Abels, privately acquired in 2005.

The obverse of this coin shows either Lord Shiva, or Brahma, the god of creation, who is also known as Svayambhu ('Self-Born' in Sanskrit). Both deities are commonly depicted with three heads.
