★ A very rare Akragantine litra from Eryx ★
SICILY. Eryx. Circa 480-472 BC. Litra (Silver, 10 mm, 0.53 g, 1 h). ERYKI-ИOИ Eagle standing left with closed wings. Rev. Crab. HGC 12, 296. SNG ANS 1340. Very rare. Somewhat porous and with a flan crack, otherwise, good very fine.
From the Hestia Collection, formed over the past five decades, privately acquired before 2005.
The appearance of an eagle and a crab on this litra suggests some sort of Akragantine dominance over Eryx. The issue may date to the later years of Theron of Akragas (circa 488-473/2 BC), whose son, Thrasydaios, ruled in Himera in 483/2-472 BC.
