★ Myon, the 'muscle bundle' ★
ASIA MINOR. Uncertain. 2nd-3rd centuries. Tessera (Lead, 15 mm, 3.18 g), Myon. MY-ΩN Victory advancing right, holding wreath in her right hand and palm frond in her left. Rev. Blank. Rostovtsev, Римские свинцовые тессеры (1903), no. 55 (Three Graces in wreath on other side). Gülbay & Kireç 11-12. Very fine.
From a European collection, acquired before 2021.
Gülbay & Kireç read VM-NΩ, but the legend can also be read outwardly, MV-ΩN. "Myon" means "muscle bundle" in ancient Greek and as a pars pro toto, this may be understood as a nickname for a strong, muscular man. Myon is attested as a magistrate's name on coins from several mints in Asia Minor.
