★ A beautiful tetradrachm from Messana ★

SICILY. Messana. 420-413 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 17.40 g, 2 h). The nymph Messana, wearing long chiton and holding kentron in her left hand and reins in both, driving biga of mules to right; in exergue, two dolphins swimming toward each other. Rev. MEΣΣA-NI-O-N Hare springing to right; below, cockle shell. Caltabiano 510 (D204/R210). Rare with this symbol. A beautifully toned and perfectly centered piece. Struck from a somewhat worn obverse die, otherwise, about extremely fine.
