Description

★ The second coin known from Seleukeia on the Issos ★

CILICIA. Seleukeia on the Issos. 2nd to 1st century BC. Tetrachalkon (Bronze, 19 mm, 6.91 g, 3 h). Laureate head of Zeus to right. Rev. ΣEΛEΥKEΩN / TΩN ΠΡOΣ TO - IΣΣIKON KOΛ/ΠΩI Thyrsos. E. Levante: Greek Imperial Coinage of Cilicia, in: Nomismata 1, Milano 1997, p. 44 corr. (date and reverse legend). Of the highest rarity, apparently only the second coin known from this mint. Earthen deposits and minor cleaning marks , otherwise, very fine.

The polis of Seleukeia on the Issos is only known from this and another coin. Levante suggested four different localizations, but a conclusion will probably only by reached by finding epigraphic evidence of the city.
