Description

★ A very rare obol from Thasos ★

ISLANDS OFF THRACE, Thasos. Circa 463-449 BC. Obol (Silver, 8 mm, 0.55 g). Two dolphins swimming left; below, two pellets. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. Cf. Roma, 21 May 2013, 398 (Hemiobol and of Archaic style). SNG Copenhagen -. Tsintsifos, Perix Pangaion Epeiros, -. Very rare and of charming style. Good very fine.

From a German collection, assembled since the 1960s.

Recent research has shown that a considerable number of dolphin fractions must have been struck in the Thraco-Macedonian hinterland. The fabric and very neat style of the coin, however, point toward the Thasian mint, hence our tentative attribution.
