★ A well pedigreed tetradrachm from Messana ★

SICILY. Messana. 412-408 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 17.50 g, 1 h). Charioteer, holding kentron in his right hand and reins in his left, driving biga of mules to left; in exergue, two dolphins confronted. Rev. ΜΕΣΣΑΝΙΟΝ Hare springing left; above, dove flying left; below, grain ear. Caltabiano 620.15 ( this coin, D220/R246). Rizzo pl. XXVII, 5 ( same dies ). SNG Fitzwilliam 1079 ( same dies ). A lovely and lightly toned piece of fine style. Minor deposits, otherwise, very fine.
