Description

★ An unusual 'offstrike' in bronze from drachm dies ★

CAPPADOCIA. Caesaraea-Eusebia. Antoninus Pius, 138-161. AE (Bronze, 26 mm, 11.15 g, 7 h), an 'offstrike' from drachm dies. [AYTOKP AN]TⲰNЄΙΝΟC CЄΒΑCTOC Bare head of Antoninus Pius to right. Rev. ΥΠΑΤΟC B Mount Argaios surmounted by statue of Sol-Helios standing front, holding globe in his right hand and long scepter in his left. Cf. Ganschow 213a (for the type in silver). A very unusual and highly interesting piece. Somewhat rough and with two edge cracks, otherwise, good fine.

From the collection of Dr. P. Vogl, privately acquired from Aufhäuser in summer 1990 (with original ticket).

This interesting piece was struck from drachm dies on a much larger bronze flan, serving perhaps as a trial issue.
