★ A very interesting hybrid issue ★
L. Scipio Asiagenus, 106 BC. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 3.63 g, 12 h), Rome. Laureate head of Jupiter to left. Rev. T• MA P CL•Q• VR Victory driving triga to right, holding reins in both hands. Cf. Babelon (Cornelia) 24, Crawford 311/1c, RBW 1154 and Sydenham 576b (for obverse), and Babelon (Claudia) 2 and (Manlia) 3, Crawford 299/1b, RBW 1142 and Sydenham 570a (for reverse). Extremely rare and of great interest. Minor marks, otherwise, very fine.
From the Red Ox Collection and the collection of the Czech musician Adolf Picek (circa 1885-1978), and formerly in the possession of an Italian banker, whose life was saved by Mr. Picek in the Battles of the Piave River on the Italian Front in 1917-1918 and who presented his savior with 'four socks of old coins' in reward.
This interesting hybrid issue combines an obverse of L. Scipio Asiagenus with a reverse of T. Manlius Mancinus, Appius Claudius Pulcher and Q. Urbinus in error.
