Description

Q. Lutatius Cerco, 109-108 BC. Denarius (Silver, 20 mm, 3.71 g, 1 h), Rome. ROMA / CERCO Head of Roma to right, wearing crested helmet decorated with plume and two stars; behind, star (mark of value). Rev. Q•LVTATI / Q Galley to right with oak wreath. Babelon (Lutatia) 2. Crawford 305/1. RBW 1146. Sydenham 559. Light deposits and with minor marks, otherwise, about very fine.

From the Red Ox Collection and the collection of the Czech musician Adolf Picek (circa 1885-1978), and formerly in the possession of an Italian banker, whose life was saved by Mr. Picek in the Battles of the Piave River on the Italian Front in 1917-1918 and who presented his savior with 'four socks of old coins' in reward.
