Description

★ Combining a tetrarchic obverse with a reverse of Probus ★

UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Late 3rd-early 4th centuries. 'Aureus' (Gold, 21 mm, 5.09 g, 10 h), 'Tetrarchic Biga Group D'. Imitating Diocletian, 284-305, or Maximian, 286-305. DPOƧIИↀΛ COVↀVS Laureate head of Diocletian or Maximianus to left. Rev. CΛ∾OΔH / OↀO Victory driving fast biga to right, holding branch in her right hand and reins in her left. Cf. Aurum Barbarorum II, 1905-1906 (for similar reverses, but Probus on the obverse). Holed for suspension and with some bumps on the edge, otherwise, very fine.

From the Aurum Barbarorum Collection.

The reverse of this piece is derived from imitations of coins of Probus and reminiscent of lot 2402 above. However, the portrait has a 'tetrarchic touch' to it and is likely influenced by aurei of Diocletian and, mostly, Maximianus.
