SICILY. Syracuse. Dionysios I, 405-367 BC. 100 Litrai or Double Dekadrachm (Gold, 13 mm, 5.81 g, 3 h), circa 400-370 BC. ΣYPAKOΣIΩN Female head (of Arethusa?) to left, her hair bound up in a sphendone ornamented with two stars, wearing triple-pendant earring and pearl necklace; pellet flanking neck. Rev. Youthful Herakles, nude, kneeling right on rocky ground line, wrestling the Nemean lion. Bérend 15.10 ( this coin ). Jameson 814 ( same obverse die ). SNG ANS 329 ( same dies ). SNG Lockett 985 ( same dies ). A beautiful example with an excellent pedigree. Struck from somewhat worn dies with some breaks, otherwise, good very fine.
