Rhine Legions. Anonymous, circa May/June-December 68. Denarius (Silver, 17 mm, 3.00 g, 5 h), uncertain mint in Gaul or in the Rhine Valley. 'S P Q R Group'. MARS VLTOR Mars, nude but for helmet and parazonium slung around his chest, advancing right, wielding spear in his right hand and holding shield in his left. Rev. S P Q R within oak wreath. BMC 23 and pl. 50, 13 ( same dies ). CG 91.2 ( this coin ). Cohen 414. Martin 71. Nicolas 60 and pl. II, 60 BR ( same dies ). RIC 54. Very rare and among the finest of only twelve known examples, only five of which are in private hands. A beautifully toned coin struck on good metal. Some corrosion and minor coppery deposits on the obverse, otherwise, good very fine.
