An exceptional piece, perfectly centered and very well struck on sound silver. Insignificant die break on the reverse, otherwise, good extremely fine.

A considerable number of Perikles' 1/3 staters have appeared on the market in recent years. The issue may be connected to Perikles' conquests in Lycia and Caria and/or the satrapal revolt of 362/1, but it was struck in great haste and with little quality control: the vast majority of the surviving examples were struck from worn or broken dies and are often poorly centered on small flans. A well-centered piece such as ours, struck from undamaged dies on a large flan and with a fully readable reverse legend, is in fact very rare.
