Description

DYNASTS OF LYCIA. Perikles, circa 380-360 BC. 1/3 Stater (Silver, 19 mm, 2.80 g). Facing lion's scalp. Rev. 𐊓𐊁𐊕-𐊆𐊋-𐊍𐊁 ('Perikle' in Lycian) Triskeles. BMC 157. Müseler VIII, 49. SNG von Aulock 4255. An exceptional piece, perfectly centered and very well struck on sound silver. Insignificant die break on the reverse, otherwise, good extremely fine.

A considerable number of Perikles' 1/3 staters have appeared on the market in recent years. The issue may be connected to Perikles' conquests in Lycia and Caria and/or the satrapal revolt of 362/1, but it was struck in great haste and with little quality control: the vast majority of the surviving examples were struck from worn or broken dies and are often poorly centered on small flans. A well-centered piece such as ours, struck from undamaged dies on a large flan and with a fully readable reverse legend, is in fact very rare.
