Description

★ An excellent portrait of Antiochos VII ★

ISLAMIC, Anatolia & al-Jazira (Post-Seljuk). Artuqids (Mardin). Husam al-Din Timurtash, AH 516-547 / AD 1122-1152. Dirham (Bronze, 30 mm, 13.29 g, 9 h), without mint and date. Large diademed male head to right. Rev. in inner field, 'al-Malik al-alim / al-adil Husa/m al-Din'' around, 'ibn Artuq il-Ghazi Timurtash ibn'; all in Kufic. Spengler & Sayles 26. A splendid example with an excellent portrait. Light doubling minor area of weakness on the reverse, otherwise, extremely fine.

From an important collection of Ayyubid and post-Seljuk coins.

The head on the obverse of this issue was copied from tetradrachms of the Seleukid King Antiochos VII (138-129 BC), who lived almost 1300 years before Najm al-Din Alpi. Time-wise, this is the equivalent of the portrait of the Byzantine emperor Leo III (717-741) appearing on a modern coin!
