Description

UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Late 3rd-early 4th centuries. 'Aureus' (Subaeratus, 19 mm, 2.01 g, 6 h), 'Plated Group'. IIO DIO ONINIIZ DII Laureate and cuirassed imperial bust to right. Rev. II IZIΘ Θ / ΘZΘ Two male figures standing left and right; the one on the right holds a long scepter ending in a knot in his right hand; the one on the left holds a shorter scepter ending in a 'treetop' in his right hand and places an uncertain object on a tripod or altar between them. A very bright and attractive subaeratus. Holed and with some breaks in plating, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

From the Aurum Barbarorum Collection.

What exactly this reverse copies is difficult to say: perhaps it is a rendering of two emperors standing together as on Calicó 4300 (Numerian), 4342 (Carinus), 4423 (Diocletian) and Maximian 4610.
