★ An extremely rare diobol from Lampsakos ★
MYSIA. Lampsakos. Circa 400-334 BC. Diobol (Silver, 12 mm, 1.29 g, 2 h). Diademed janiform female head, with circular earring. Rev. ΛA-M Head of Athena to right, wearing double laureate Corinthian helmet; all within incuse square. Baldwin pl. VI, 5 ( same dies ). SNG Paris -. SNG von Aulock -. Extremely rare. A coin of wonderful style, very well struck and preserved. Very minor doubling on the reverse, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.
From the Kleinkunst Collection, ex Auctiones 15, 18-19 September 1985, 129.
This coin is quite exceptional for adding a double laurel wreath to Athena's helmet on the reverse. Why this was done is unclear: was it, perhaps, influenced by the Corinthian pegasoi with a single laurel wreath on Athena's helmet?
