CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 340-335 BC. Didrachm or Nomos (Silver, 23 mm, 7.79 g, 4 h). Nude youth riding horse walking to right, raising his right hand to crown the horse's head; below horse, nude boy kneeling right, cleaning the horse’s left front hoof; to right, Φ. Rev. TAPAΣ Youthful oikist, nude, riding dolphin to left, holding kantharos in his right hand and shield and trident in his left; below, Π above waves. Basel 86 ( this coin ). Fischer-Bossert 694f ( this coin, V261/R541). Vlasto 514 ( same dies ). Rare. A beautiful example of this charming and desirable type. Traces of overstriking on the obverse, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.
