Description

★ From the Moretti and Gillet ('Kunstfreund') collections and ex Hess-Leu 31, 6-7 December 1966, 15 ★

ETRURIA. Populonia. Circa 300-250 BC. 10 Asses (Silver, 18 mm, 4.17 g). Laureate and slightly bearded head of Aplu to left; behind, X (mark of value). Rev. Blank. Basel 14 ( this coin ). EC Group XVI, 70.2 ( this coin, O1/R1). A beautifully toned example with an excellent pedigree, struck from an early die state and in exceptional condition for the issue. Extremely fine.

From the Kleinkunst Collection and from the collections of A. D. Moretti, Numismatica Ars Classica 13, 8 October 1998, 14 and C. Gillet ('Kunstfreund'), photofile no. 6, ex Hess-Leu 31, 6-7 December 1966, 15.

The Populonian silver coinage must have been quite carelessly struck in large quantities and great haste as it is notoriously plagued by heavy die wear. Fortunately, this example is an exception to the rule, revealing even the light beard Aplu, who is the Etruscan equivalent to the Greek god Apollo, is wearing.
