Description

★ An extremely rare and impressive pseudo-autonomous issue from Temenothyrae ★

PHRYGIA. Temenothyrae. Pseudo-autonomous issue. Hexassarion (Bronze, 33 mm, 16.54 g, 7 h), Nikomachos, first archon for the second time. Time of Philip I, 244-249. ΘЄA PΩMH Draped and cuirassed bust of Roma to right, wearing crested Attic helmet. Rev. NIKOMAXOC APXIЄ•P•APX / •A• TO •B• // THMЄNOΘYPЄICI The Dioskouroi standing facing, heads turned right and left, each wearing pilos surmounted by a star and holding a spear. BMC 14. SNG Copenhagen -. SNG München -. SNG von Aulock -. Extremely rare. A large and impressive issue. The obverse somewhat smoothed, otherwise, very fine.

The fact that the name of the archiereus is in the nominative and the ethnic in the dative indicates that this issue was paid for by the first archon Nikomachos as a form of euergetism to his polis. It is worth noting that the helmeted deity on the obverse of this issue is clearly identified as 'goddess Roma', whereas Athena, who appears on a smaller denomination (see below, lot 890), is not.
